It’s always a pleasant adventure to drive down in your RV across the open roads and enjoy the natural beauty to your hearts content. RVs have become an indispensable item for people who love to embark on long journeys to the wildernesses and great outdoors. Indeed it is much better than the boring journeys in your cold old car – its so much fun to enjoy the comforts of home while traveling across scenic locations fro your dream vacation. However, one of the major challenges that are faced by all RV owners is to drive safely and successfully on open roads.

Just because of its sheer size it is often more difficult to drive a recreational vehicle compared to a car or even a truck. Particularly, when you are on the highway, it is important that your motorhome blends in well with the smaller cars that are much more agile and your car doesn’t really block the road and create trouble for other drivers on the road. When you are driving recreational vehicle it is important that you are well aware of the road and traffic rules. There are various points that you need to be particularly careful about when you are on the streets in your RV.

Be Patient: Always keep in mind the size of your recreational vehicle, it is not your small car that you can blaze through the road. While on your recreational vehicle it is important to be patient and drive slow. Recreational vehicles are just not the type to drive aggressively at a high speed. Its just like you are adding wheels to your home and driving it along, so you need to give due consideration to its bulk and keep the speed in control. For those drivers who are a bit impatient it is often difficult to adjust to this slow moving giants but for a safe travel it is important that you adjust your mindset. Try to keep your speed below 10 miles per hour. 10 miles per hour would be relatively good speed for a RV that would keep things under control yet cover enough ground in short span.

Plan and Create Your Road Map: If you can plan your road map well that would probably save you more than half the trouble with your RV. Try to avoid interstates and highways that are particularly known for high-speed traffic. Also, it is very helpful, if you can plan your tour to avoid driving through busy cities during rush hours. Try to avoid the more commonly used routes and find alternative routes that has relatively less traffic and often offer better natural view. However, it is also important that while deciding on these alternative routes, you have complete information about these routes so that you don’t get stuck at some point due to narrow or bad road conditions.

Never drive in bad weather: Bad weather conditions put up a challenge for all drivers irrespective of the type of vehicle they are driving and the challenge is even greater if you are driving a RV. Motor homes and recreational vehicles generally do not take to bad weathers and are particularly difficult top drive during high strong winds. It is advisable to take off the roads during bad weather and drive another day once the weather has calmed down.

Avoid Slopes: Try to avoid slopes, both uphill and downhill when driving your RV. It becomes very difficult to drive up steep slopes and also to control your RV while moving downhill. Even if it requires you to travel a few extra miles off your route it is always better to do so than to take the risk of moving up or down the slope.

Towing Vehicles: Towing a vehicle is a common practice for RV owners but it makes driving an RV all the more difficult. You need to be doubly cautious when you have a towing vehicle along with your motor home. It is advisable to detach towing vehicle when you need to backup your RV. Unhook the towing vehicle and park it safely, then ask someone to guide you, when you back up the RV.

Campground Reservations: Always try to make your campground reservations in advance. Use the campground directories to locate and plan the campgrounds that you would use for your overnight stays. If you are going to stay at a campground where you have never stayed before, it is also wise to do your reservation for just one night to ensure that the campground meets your requirements than to do a longer reservation for cost cutting.

RV trips are meant for enjoyment and pleasure. Following these basic guidelines would definitely be helpful to ensure road safety and better organize your RV trip for hassle free enjoyment.

If you are a part-time RVer, the travel trailer may be an option worth taking a look at. It gives you some of the freedom of a full blown RV without the price.

A travel trailer is not quite a traditional RV. The obvious difference is you pull a travel trailer. At their core, travel trailers are essentially a form of a mobile home on wheels. Of course, they are designed to be hauled to and fro and can take a beating with the best of them.

Travel trailers come in a wide variety of forms. Some are tiny with next to no amenities – basically a place to sleep. Others are really big and basically serve the purpose of a full blown home you can haul all over the place for extended trips limited only by your budget. Let’s take a closer look.

The bottom of the market is the trailer that retails from about $12,000 or less. These trailers are the roughing it version of the market. You are going to get cheap fabrics and appliances, to the extent you get them. These appliances may be limited solely to a small propane stove. If there is any type of a bathroom facility, it will be laughably tiny. When considering this type of trailer, you need to be comfortable buying what is essentially a sleeping space and somewhere to get out of bad weather.

Moving up a step, trailers priced from $35,000 on down are tailored more towards the traditional RV travel experience. These trailers tend to come in two forms. The first is a shorter unit with lots of amenities. The second is a bigger, longer unit with fewer amenities, but a ton of living space for the price. Which should you choose? It depends on whether you need space or not. If not, go with the amenities version.

High-end trailers tend to be a luxury item. Whether to buy one is a matter of personal preference between preferring to haul the trailer or buy and drive a traditional RV. Why? Well, the prices are comparable. You can spend up to $100,000 or more on a high-end trailer. As a result, you need to ask yourself whether an RV would be preferable. There is no right answer, just your personal choice.

The quality and cost of travel trailers tend to be very brand specific. When shopping for them, make sure to research the different units and then canvas as many dealers as possible. You will be surprised how prices differ.

Motor coach RVs are expensive and when it comes to making your choice between a travel trailer or fifth wheel, you may be curious as to what the main differences are between these two RV options.

The main difference in these two RVs is that the travel trailer is towed by a truck, SUV, van or car. They come in a variety of sizes and options, but the travel trailer that you choose should be one that is easily hauled by your vehicle of choice. The second main difference between travel trailers is that they can be a few thousand dollars cheaper depending on the amenities that you choose.

Travel trailers are often lighter in weigh than a fifth wheel, but they may also include many of the same features of an RV. Depending on the size of the travel trailer, you may have the option of roof top patios, bay windows, hideaway beds, slide-outs, offices, lowering roofs and even fireplaces. All of these features make camping in your travel trailer a lot more comfortable than a tent or some of the smaller van RVs. They are designed to have all of the conveniences of home and are easily pulled by a ball hitch. They range in size from 12 to 35 feet and some models may sleep up to 8 people.

Fifth wheels are towed by trucks that have a special “fifth wheel” hitch. These RVs tend to have taller ceilings and more slide-out options than travel trailers. Some models may even have four slide-outs. The unique shape of the fifth wheel allows for a bi-level design for a master bedroom or living room over the truck bed. There is often a picture window at either end for a nice view from the trailer. These RVs also include many of the conveniences of home as well. Many are elegantly furnished and have a variety of features for cooking and just hanging out.

Both trailers are able to be detached from the towing vehicle. This is very handy as it allows you to unhook and use your vehicle freely. Large coach type RVs can be difficult to maneuver around town when you are sightseeing. Travel trailers and fifth wheels allow you to use your vehicle independently of the trailer. With both types of travel trailers it is important to match the weight of the RV to the towing capacity of your towing vehicle. Your dealer will be able to help you determine this. There have also been lightweight fifth wheels that have recently been introduced and may be an option for you as well.
